On Saturday 17 February the men’s and women’s Junior Pairs titles were decided. There were only two entries in the women’s so play was best of three games. Donna Gripp skipping with Janet Olliver leading won two games in succession against Ralda Adams (s) and Linda Moy. The first game was close with the lead changing a number of times until Donna and Janet won four ends in succession from the 12 th to the 15 th end. Ralda and Linda scored 1 on the final end but Donna and Janet won 15 – 13. Donna went out to a big 13 – 2 lead after 9 ends in the second game and though Ralda’s team finished strongly with 9 of the last 12 shots the lead was too much and Donna and Janet won 19 – 15.
The four men’s teams played a round robin of three games. In the first round Graeme Mathie (s) and Arnold Taiaroa walloped Jim Pailthorpe and Ron Evans 25 – 3 and Alan Glynn and Ron Harland beat Peter Brown and Les Galloway 17 – 13 winning nine of the ends from end 5 through to 14. Les with an injured right arm, bravely played left handed throughout the day but was not able to match his usual accuracy.
Jim and Ron then upset Alan and Rob in the second game 19 – 10 after leading 14 – 2 at one stage, and Peter and Les went down again narrowly 14 – 16 to Graeme and Arnold. This effectively ended the chances of Peter and Les but meant that Alan and Rob needed a big win over Graeme and Arnold to take the title. Their 17 -5 win proved to be not enough and Graeme and Arnold took the title on differential points.
Congratulations to our champions Donna and Janet and Graeme and Arnold.
